Injuries

Injuries to the toe, foot, or ankle occur during common day-to-day activities related to sports, recreation, work, and home.  The risk for injury depends on a person’s age and the type of activity.

Types

  • Acute or sudden injuries occur when the foot is twisted, jammed, bent, or jerked abnormally.  They might also occur as the result of a direct blow, a fall, or a penetration.  Sudden, severe pain is usually followed by bruising and swelling.  Acute toe, foot, and ankle injuries include bruises, punctures, breaks/fractures, dislocations, crushing injuries, and injuries to ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints.
  • Overuse injuries occur when toe, foot, and ankle joints receive too much stress through overuse or by repetition of an activity.  Overuse toe, foot, and ankle injuries include bursitis, Achilles tendinitis or tendinosis, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, and metatarsalgia.

Treatment

Treatment for a toe, foot, or ankle injury depends on its location, type, and severity as well as when it occurred.  Consideration is also given to your age, health status, and activity requirements.  Non-surgical treatment options include general first aid, special devices, medicines, and physical therapy.  Surgery is an option in some cases.
